It is licensed to Saint Paul and serves the Minneapolis-St. Paul area in Minnesota, United States. The station is non-commercial and listener-supported, and carries news, public affairs and talk programming throughout the day.

Minnesota Public Radio is a public broadcaster, and its news network combines NPR programmes such as Morning Edition and All Things Considered with locally produced coverage, including the midday programme Minnesota Now. The call letters spell the word know; the news programming moved to 91.1 FM in 1991, when classical music moved to 99.5 FM. Studios are at the MPR Broadcast Center in downtown Saint Paul.
