The service is operated by the Australian Broadcasting Corporation, the national public broadcaster. It began in Cairns in 1950 and serves a wide region that includes Cooktown, Mossman, Innisfail, Weipa and the Torres Strait Islands, through several AM and FM transmitters. The 801 AM frequency is one of those transmitters, while the main Cairns FM service is on 106.7. Programming is in English and is aimed at regional residents who want local updates such as weather, road conditions, and emergency information during cyclone and wet seasons.

Expect morning and afternoon talk programs, hourly news bulletins and national ABC programs at other times of the day. This stream is delivered as HLS with AAC audio at around 115 kbps in mono.
