About Akashvani Maitree
Akashvani Maitree is a Bengali-language radio channel of All India Radio, the public broadcaster of India. It was launched by President Pranab Mukherjee in Kolkata on 23 August 2016 and is aimed at Bengali-speaking listeners on both sides of the India-Bangladesh border.
The channel follows a 2015 bilateral understanding between India and Bangladesh. It is transmitted from Chinsurah in West Bengal on 594 kHz medium wave, and is also available online. Part of its content is sourced from Bangladesh Betar, and the Kolkata station has historical ties to the 1971 liberation war. It is part of Prasar Bharati, India's public service broadcaster, and carries the Akashvani name, the on-air brand of All India Radio.
Expect Bengali-language programming of music, cultural features, news and talk intended to strengthen cultural links between the two countries. This stream is delivered as HLS (AAC audio) at a low bitrate of about 64 kbps, suited to mobile connections, so listeners abroad can follow it too.
