Radio Heartland
About Radio Heartland
Radio Heartland is a 24-hour roots and Americana music stream from Minnesota Public Radio, produced alongside the public radio station The Current. It plays acoustic, folk, Americana and roots music, with a particular connection to musicians from Minnesota and the surrounding region.
The service grew out of MPR's tradition of playing roots artists, and it has been managed by host Mike Pengra since 2010. In the Twin Cities it is also heard on the HD2 channel of 91.1 FM, and it is available anywhere through the online stream and The Current's app. It is listener-supported public radio, so it carries no commercial format, and it sits next to sister streams such as Local Current, which focuses on Minnesota artists.
Listeners can expect a relaxed, music-first mix of singer-songwriters, folk, country-leaning Americana and acoustic sessions, presented in English. This stream is delivered as a 128 kbps MP3 over HTTPS, which suits both mobile and desktop listening. The station's own page describes its music as part of The Current's broader mission of discovering and sharing great music.
