About Classical Charlottesville

Classical Charlottesville is the classical music service of WTJU 91.1 FM, the University of Virginia's radio station in Charlottesville, Virginia. It plays classical music including choral works, drawn from a broad range of periods and composers.

WTJU first went on air in 1957 with a classical format and has since added other genres such as jazz, folk and rock to its main schedule. This stream carries the classical programming, which includes hosted shows such as Heifetz On Air, along with a classical music marathon held each December. The station is owned by the University of Virginia; the classical service has its own site at charlottesvilleclassical.org. Because it is run from a university station, the programming reflects the tastes of its local hosts and volunteers rather than a national network playlist.

The stream is a 256 kbps MP3 at a 48 kHz sample rate, which gives high audio quality for orchestral and vocal music. Expect recorded classical performances introduced by local hosts, suitable for both long-time enthusiasts and newcomers.
